Nurse farewelled after 52 years

After 52 years on the job, nurse Irene Zikovic says she never tires of helping a baby come into the world.

“I was just always in awe when a baby was born,” Mrs Zikovic said. “No matter how many you saw, it was always a great occasion.”

Mrs Zikovic, who started her nursing career in Edinburgh in 1960, will officially retire on Friday after 39 years working in the Goldfields.

Moving to Australia in 1971, she worked in New South Wales and Bruce Rock before moving to Kalgoorlie-Boulder in 1973. The mother-of-two then worked at the child health clinic in Boulder, the Kalgoorlie Hospital and as a community health nurse before joining Population Health in 1999.

A dedicated and popular figure, Mrs Zikovic said she had enjoyed her time as a midwife and child health worker, but it was her colleagues she would miss the most.

“I think the area of work that you enjoy is great, but often it’s great because of the people you work with,” she said.
