Sunday bottle shop fears

The number of liquor stores open on Sunday in Geraldton could increase dramatically following approval of a Sunday licence to Cellarbrations at Sunset Beach.

The development has concerned police who fear an increase in alcohol-related crimes at weekends as a result.

Police said the recent approval had set a precedent for other alcohol retailers to submit applications to the Department of Liquor.

This would include the major liquor stores owned by Woolworths and Coles.

Mid West Gascoyne Alcohol Enforcement Unit Sgt Shane Hickman said it was not “ideal” if other licensed outlets opened on Sundays.
