Troubled bridge to finally get fixed

Wider, longer, higher were the key words as Transport Minister Troy Buswell announced on Monday that the Greenough River Bridge will be replaced at a cost of $18 million.

Opened in January 1953 by the then-Member for Greenough, David Brand, the bridge barely copes with today’s traffi c of around 2200 vehicles a day and was severely damaged by fl oods in 2006.

On that occasion Brand Hwy was closed for 65 hours, cutting supplies and access to essential facilities in Geraldton.

Mr Buswell said construction would begin late next year and be completed by mid-2014.

“Greenough River Bridge is an important link on the Brand Hwy connecting Perth to Geraldton, the broader Mid-West region and the State’s North-West” he said.
