Taste of Germany pops up in Freo

Coffee may well run through the veins of those who frequent Fremantle's beloved cappuccino strip, but a beer aficionado says South Terrace is ready for a beverage with a German twist.

Rhett Pace said that every Friday to Sunday, Perth's first German beer hall - Zapfhall, which opens this week as a pop-up venue - would give West Australians a chance to taste brews from Germany, with dishes to complement the drinks menu. Mr Pace said he and co-owner Andreia Anthony were excited about introducing a slice of Germany to the heart of the port city.

"There are so many drinking holes in the city and Fremantle that we knew it was time for something different," he said.

"Germans are well-known for their beer and Aussie brewers are up-and-coming in the world beer awards, so we're trying to create a fun food and beer hall where we can showcase German beers and some locally brewed, German- inspired beers."

Spread out over about 350sqm, the split-level Zapfhall has the traditional long tables. Patrons will be able to feast on everything from bratwurst and beer bread to pork belly and knuckles.

Zapfhall has a capacity for 200 people, so the owners decided a ticket system - that includes a beer and a pretzel - would be the best way to handle the big crowds expected.
