'Bus rage' passenger charged

A man who allegedly verbally abused a bus driver and a fellow passenger on a CAT bus in Fremantle yesterday afternoon has been charged with disorderly conduct.

The 26-year-old man is alleged to have boarded the bus on Marine Terrace and started to become aggressive towards other passengers.

In particular it is alleged he verbally abused an elderly passenger which caused the bus driver to ask the man to get off the bus.

Police will further allege the man then became verbally aggressive towards the driver, spat on the floor of the bus and continued to direct obscenities towards passengers.

A passenger on the bus eventually escorted the man off the bus.

Another passenger filmed the incident and handed over her vision to police.

The 22-year-old praised a woman sitting behind her who yelled at the man to get off the bus as he continued his alleged lewd behaviour.

“I think it was brave for her, it’s brave for anyone to get involved particularly because no one had any idea how he could have reacted,” she said.

Fremantle police charged the man with disorderly behaviour in a public place, threatening to injure, endanger or harm any person and disorderly behaviour in a police station or lock-up.

The man was refused bail and will appear in the Fremantle Magistrates Court tomorrow.
