Hunger striker in hospital on Nauru

An Iranian asylum seeker who has starved himself for 36 days has been shifted from the detention camp at Nauru to the island’s hospital.

Refugee Action Coalition spokesman Ian Rintoul said the asylum seeker named Omid had been on a hunger strike for more than a month and started excreting blood yesterday afternoon.

“We are gravely concerned for Omid ... it may be that Omid has already suffered permanent organ damage,” he said.

A spokeswoman for the Immigration Department said the asylum seeker was taken to hospital yesterday for “further assessments”.

She declined to provide further information.
