Coad most popular in Bankwest art prize

Rachel Coad's Commando 2013

Fremantle artist Rachel Coad has won the $5000 People's Choice Award in the 2013 Bankwest Art Prize.

Coad's oil on linen painting Commando 2013 received the most votes among the 19 finalists.

The first-time Bankwest Art Prize finalist said she was extremely pleased to have been recognised by the public's votes.

"I am honoured to have been a finalist for 2013 and receive such wonderful feedback from people who've visited the exhibition," Coad said. "I love that the Bankwest Art Prize is WA-based and has developed a great following over the years."

Susanna Castleden won the $30,000 major prize, announced last November, for Camping Continuum (Indian Ocean Drive WA), her acrylic paint and stencil treatment of 12 picnic tables.

Bankwest art curator Sandra Murray was impressed with Coad's work. "I'm sure Rachel will take great encouragement from being recognised for her dedication to her art practice. It's a striking work," she said.

The 2013 Bankwest Art Prize exhibition is showing at Bankwest Place, Perth, until March 3. Entry is free.
