Ben and Jemma Van Ryt consider their newborn son Thomas James to be their "little miracle".

The Perth duo, who rose to fame on the inaugural series of House Rules, are basking in the glow of becoming first-time parents to the tot, who arrived on November 21.

But it was not smooth sailing for the couple, with Jemma suffering a heartbreaking miscarriage in 2013.

"It wasn't long after we finished filming that I fell pregnant and then I did lose that baby at 12 weeks," Jemma revealed to the latest issue of New Idea.

"I fell pregnant again a couple of months later. I was a little bit anxious my whole pregnancy but it all went to plan and we got the perfect little baby."

Ben, a carpenter, is equally chuffed with his new role as a father to baby Thomas.

"He's a little miracle - we love him," the 28-year-old said.

"Everyone says how much sleep you lose and how tough it is and how big a life change it is but I reckon it's for the better because we've had a ball so far."

Jemma and Ben are still in the Melville home they had renovated on House Rules, albeit with a few changes to make it more child-friendly.

The property recently underwent a Hamptons-style makeover to better fit the duo's taste and the spare bedroom was turned into Thomas' nursery.

"Because we didn't know the sex of the baby, we kept the nursery quite neutral - whites with an animal theme," Jemma, 28, said.

Ben has now returned to work for his carpentry business, while the new mother is on maternity leave from her job as a legal assistant.

As for what the future holds for the WA family, the parents agree that they are looking forward to watching their son grow.

"I'm excited for when Thomas can walk and talk and then the fun will begin," Ben told the magazine.
