Pop star Demi Lovato has criticised Lady Gaga for her vomit-filled performance at the South by Southwest festival in Texas, insisting it was insensitive.

Lovato has struggled with bulimia for years and claims the Poker Face singer's idea to allow British artist Millie Brown to throw up over her glamorises a disease that blights the lives of many young girls.

In an angry tweet on Friday, Lovato, who spent three months in rehab attempting to treat her self-harming issues, wrote: "Sad . . . As if we didn't have enough people glamorising eat (sic) disorders already.

"Putting the word ART in it isn't a free card to do whatever you want without consequences. Would you let someone bring a needle and shoot up on you? Addiction is addiction."

Brown said there was a "clear difference" between her performance art and the eating disorder, insisting she didn't intend to offend anyone when she made herself regurgitate on Gaga as she performed the song Swine.

Gaga plays Perth Arena on August 20.
