Leighton to extend Mitchell Fwy

Leighton wins Freeway extension job

Leighton has won a $160 million Main Roads WA contract to extend the Mitchell Freeway north by six kilometres.

The work will extend the freeway from Burns Beach Road in Joondalup to Hester Avenue in Clarkson.

Leighton executive chairman and chief executive Marcelino Fernández Verdes said the contract pointed to the strong pipeline of work ahead over the mid-to-long term as governments across Australia continued to invest in urban infrastructure programs.

The extension from Burns Beach Road to Hester Avenue will consist of two lanes in each direction, with the capacity to add a third lane in the future.

The carriageways will continue on either side of the northern suburbs railway line.

The project also includes principal shared paths for pedestrians and cyclists, the extension of Neerabup Road east from Connolly Drive to Wanneroo Road, duplication of Hester Avenue from Hidden Valley Retreat to Wanneroo Road, grade-separated interchanges at Burns Beach Road, Neerabup Road and Hester Avenue.

Detailed design work will begin this month and construction is expected to commence in the middle of the year.

The freeway extension is planned for completion by mid-2017.

At its peak, the project will employ about 244 people.
