From crazy footy fanatics to Perth’s thriving local music scene and the weather that has the rest of the country green with envy, Made in WA will showcase the best our State has to offer.

A joint venture between Seven Perth and broadcasting students at Edith Cowan University, the half-hour program will air tomorrow in the lead-up to the WA Day public holiday, celebrating the people and places that make WA a great spot to call home.

Presented by Seven News reporter Blake Johnson and Today Tonight’s Cassie Silver, both ECU broadcasting graduates, the program affords aspiring reporters the rare opportunity to work behind the scenes on a real TV production.

It’s been 10 years since Johnson completed his studies but the experienced journalist still recalls the rush of adrenaline that came with having his first segment go to air.

“I remember how exciting it was to get something on TV — that novelty still hasn’t worn off,” he toldAAA .

“I know the hard work the students put into these kinds of programs because it’s a springboard, it’s their first chance to get something on the air so it’s pretty important for them.

“It’s a once-in-a-degree opportunity.”

Written, filmed and edited by students, Made in WA covers a variety of local stories and Silver said she was blown away by the quality of work on display.

“I’m always impressed,” she said of the initiative, which has run for more than a decade.

“Sometimes you see stories and think ‘I wish we had done that’, or ‘that would be great for us’.

“It’s funny to see that some students have beaten us to stories we would have done and aired.

“It’s pretty safe to say that some of the names, stories and faces involved are those we may actually air or employ at Seven in the future.”
