Jake Drage free from Indonesian jail

A Geraldton surfer who spent nine months in an Indonesian prison plans to celebrate his freedom by going to the beach.

Jake Drage walked free from the West Java jail today after serving his sentence for a fatal motorbike crash.

He said he was looking forward to getting home and seeing his family and friends.

He said the past nine months had been “like a yo yo, all up and downs”.

“I've never been held down for so long before,” he said. “(I) never planned on coming to jail and I don't plan on going back.”

Drage was jailed in October over a motorcycle collision in West Java that killed a local woman. The Geraldton man, who was on a surfing holiday at the time, was sentenced to nine months’ jail for reckless driving causing death.

With the three months he had already spent in custody, he was eligible for release this month.

He said it had not really sunk in yet that he was finally free.

“I’m sure once I'm past immigration and I get back on home soil, arrive at the airport and see the family and friends, I definitely think it will sink in then,” he said.

“The first thing I do when I get home, after seeing family, I'm heading straight to the beach, heading straight to the ocean.”
