Quokka selfies make internet even cuter

A new trend with a distinctly West Australian flavour is sweeping the internet, quokka selfies.

These cute and cuddly marsupials are second only to cats when it come to the internet's most clickable animal and the hashtag #quokkaselfie is a big hit on Instagram and Twitter.

Rottnest Island holiday makers have been posting pictures of themselves sharing the frame with these delightful animals.

While the tiny creatures have long been a favourite for generations of WA holiday-makers, they became global celebrities when The Huffington Post’s Ryan Grenoble dubbed them the happient animals in the world.

“Meet the quokka, a marsupial that seems to have come straight from an animator at Disney,” he said.

“Unlike a frightening number of Australian animals, the quokka poses no threat to humans and can be quite friendly.
