Irish nationals charged over roof scam

Police have charged five Irish nationals after an extensive investigation into a a home renovation scam around Perth.

The alleged offenders, who are currently in detention awaiting deportation to Ireland, were charged by Mirrabooka Detectives after a raid at a caravan park in Hazelmere.

Last month police have received a spike in complaints about men with Irish accents approaching people about home renovation work.

The men allegedly convinced a number of elderly people to hand over significant amounts of money in exchange for shoddy or incomplete work.

A 42-year-old man has been charged with two counts each of stealing and one count of unlawful possession.

A 19-year-old man has been charged with three counts each of stealing, trespassing, criminal damage and two counts each of gaining benefit by fraud, attempting to gaini benefit by fraud and one count of unlawful possession.

An 18-year-old man has been charged with two counts each of gaining benefit by fraud and stealing, one count each of criminal damage and unlawful possession.

A 23-year-old man has been charged with one count each of gaining benefit by fraud, unlawful possession and criminal damage.

They are due to appear in the Perth Magistrate's Court on February 12. A 33-year-old man has been charged with one count of unlawful possession and he is due to appear in the Perth Magistrate's Court on February 11.
