Rubbish fire sparks smoke alert

Firefighters are expected to remain at a Canning Vale recycling plant overnight as they continue to douse burning bails of paper.

Crews were called to a recycling plant located between Madison Street and Bell Street just after 4pm.

Large compressed bails of recycled paper were on fire they arrived.

A smoke warning was issued for neighbouring streets as the wind blew towards Parkwood.

About 50 firefighters have managed to contain the fire to the property with adjacent businesses safe from potential damage.

Department of Environment and Regulation Pollution Response Unit were at the scene this evening to conduct air monitoring and analysis.

There is no direct threat to the community.

The cause of the fire is unknown.


Bell and Madison Streets have been closed as a result of the fire.

It is thought an area of rubbish believed to be about 500sqm has been the focus of firefighting efforts though some small outbuildings have been affected by the fire.
