Free public transport today

Commuters will still need to pay $2 to park in Transperth car parks today despite train, bus and ferry travel being free.

Today’s free travel is compensation for the 1.5 per cent fare increases charged since July 1 for the carbon tax.

Transperth spokesman David Hynes said passengers still needed to tag-on to access the free transport.

“We need to keep a record of how many people are using the system, so we would ask that passengers still use their SmartRider as they would any other day,” Mr Hynes said. “We will ensure that no fare is taken from their SmartRiders.”

“Passengers who normally use cash tickets will not need to buy one when they get to the station.

“The $2 car parking fee was brought in separately from the carbon tax adjustment and no tax has been applied to that fee.

“All passengers will still be required to tag-on at SmartParker machines or buy cash parking tickets when they park in our car parks on November 3.”

Transport Minister Dean Nalder said the cost of the free day of public transport would be about $680,000 – the same amount of money collected by the State Government in carbon tax since July.

The removal of the carbon tax will saw many fares reduced at the weekend, mostly be about 10c.
