Union makes fresh Mermaid strike threat

The maritime union has made another threat to strike at Mermaid Marine Australia's Dampier supply base.

Mermaid said it had received notice that most employees at the base would stop work for five days from Monday.

The protected industrial action relates to enterprising bargaining talks.

Mermaid has filed an application to the Fair Work Commission to prevent the strike going ahead.

The matter will be heard tomorrow.

Mermaid said it was continuing to meet with the Maritime Union of Australia to resolve outstanding issues.

The union last month called off a threatened 10-day strike over the talks.

The marine services provider said it was taking action to limit the effect of a strike on its oil and gas clients.

"The proposed action will not directly impact MMA's slipway or vessel operations, or its international operations," Mermaid said.
