WA Rugby League: Giants miss chance to go second

With runaway WA Rugby League premiership leaders South Perth Lions not playing on the weekend, attention turned to the battle for the remaining finals spots.

And it was bad news for Joondalup Giants, who tumbled out of the top four on points difference after they let slip a 24-point lead to go down 36-34 to Rockingham Sharks.

Both sides had plenty to play for, Rockingham aiming to keep in touch with the top four and Joondalup looking to build on last week's win against the Fremantle Roosters to claim second place.

The Giants were dominant early and jumped to a 24-0 lead. But with three minutes left in the first half the Sharks had halved the deficit.

Rockingham scored two further tries early in the second half, only to see Joondalup pull away again and restore a six-point lead.

With further tries from both sides the Sharks took the lead for the first time late in the game to snatch victory.

Fremantle returned to the winner's circle by dominating Willagee Bears 52-22 at Ken Allen Field.

Delane Edwards was the catalyst for the Roosters in the opening 15 minutes as the home side raced away to a 22-6 lead.

Willagee had spells when they stemmed the tide but the home side romped away.

In the other match North Beach Sea Eagles continued their impressive home form with a 40-12 win over Kalamunda Bulldogs.

Despite dominating for large periods, the Sea Eagles were complacent after half-time, but while Bulldogs did not lack endeavour they were simply outclassed.

Inspired by youngster Josh Rogers the Sea Eagles raced to a 28-0 lead midway through the first half as their own line looked impenetrable.

As the Sea Eagles cruised throughout the second half the Bulldogs were rewarded for dogged persistence with a couple of tries.
