In a rare natural event, a kangaroo has given birth to joey twins at the Uralla Wildlife Sanctuary near Mount Barker.

It is the first time in 15 years twins have been recorded at the sanctuary.

Volunteer Lee Ricketts said they found the twin Western Grey joeys on Tuesday during feeding time.

"One of the girls had a look inside the pouch and got excited when she saw one then noticed there were two hiding down on each other," he said.

Mr Ricketts said it was rare for twins to survive in the wild because the mother could usually look after only one joey at a time.

He said the twins would eventually be released into the nature reserve surrounding the wildlife sanctuary.
