A man has been killed after his car struck a power pole in Carnarvon this morning.

The death brings WA's road toll to 20 in just under four weeks.

The man was driving his gold Ford Falcon east on North River Road at 2.05am when the car left the road and hit the pole, causing live wires to fall on the vehicle.

Police officers who were first on the scene fought to stabilise the driver, who had been thrown from the vehicle, before ambulance officers arrived.

The man was taken by ambulance to hospital but later died of his injuries.

A total of 12 people have died on country roads and 20 in total across the state this year.

This figure is more than double the eight people who had been killed in a traffic accident by the same time last year.

Anyone with information about the Carnarvon crash, or who saw the vehicle being driven prior to the crash, is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
