Thieves break in, burn kitchen

UPDATE: Newlyweds have returned home from a holiday only to find that thieves who broke into their house set fire to the kitchen.

Mirrabooka detectives have called for the public’s help to find those responsible for the fire at the couple’s Embleton house on Tuesday night.

The offenders broke into the house and stole jewellery and electronic items, police said.

"Neighbours of the Burnett Street home heard the security alarm going off about 12.15pm," police said.

"Two neighbours saw smoke coming from the house and located a fire in the kitchen area."

The neighbours had to force their way into the house through a kitchen window and managed to extinguish the fire with a garden hose before firefighters arrived.

The occupants of the house, who were married a few weeks ago, were not home at the time.

Police would like to speak to anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in the area around the time of the incident.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
