Terrifying moment dog trapped in elevator door

A dog has somehow walked away uninjured after its lead became trapped in the door of a moving elevator.

Video uploaded to Chinese social media site Weibo shows the puppy and its owner using an elevator at a building in Handan, in the southwest of China’s Hebei province on June 3.

As the owner, holding his dog’s lead, moves a box outside the elevator shaft the pooch sits inside waiting for him.

But suddenly, the doors close and horrifyingly the elevator begins to move. As it travels down, the dog’s lead pulls on its neck – pulling it towards the ceiling of the elevator shaft.

The dog dangles helplessly, flailing its legs. It is not clear what exactly happened next but fortunately, the dog was OK, according to local media.

According to reports, the elevator doors’ censors did not pick up the dog lead.

The building’s staff said the owner also did not notice his dog had moved into the elevator without him.

The video has been viewed millions of times on Weibo, with users in shock over the incident.

Many criticised the dog owner, saying he should have taken more care and some suggested he should have used his boxes to hold the door.

"That is really dangerous," one person wrote.

"They should not be allowed to own a dog," another user said.

In 2019 a similar incident occurred in the US state of Texas where the dog was trapped on the outside of the lift. A passerby managed to free the dog.
