At least three people are dead after multiple shooters opened fire in a busy strip in the US city of Philadelphia at around midnight on Saturday (local time).

Officials said a 34-year-old man, a 22-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman were killed in the shooting and at least 11 were injured. Surveillance video shows the area was packed with people at the time.

In the video, people are seen on the street when suddenly the crowd turns in the same direction. A few people are seen running away from where everyone had focused their attention.

Then, everyone starts racing away. In less than 10 seconds the bustling street was deserted and while there is no audio, it appears everyone fled after hearing gunshots.

"There were hundreds of individuals just enjoying South Street, as they do every single weekend when this shooting broke out," Philadelphia Police Inspector D F Pace said.

Police were patrolling the area at around 11.30pm on Saturday when they heard multiple shots.

Once at the scene, police saw several people lying on the footpath with gunshot wounds.

Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said one responding officer saw a man on the street corner firing at the crowd with a handgun. The officer shot the man and it is believed the shooter was wounded before he fled.

Fight led to shootout, police believe

Investigators believe one of the three killed was involved in “a physical altercation” with another man, and those two began firing at each other, with both struck by gunfire and one killed, Outlaw said.

At the scene, two handguns were recovered, however, evidence from the scene indicates there were five guns in total.

There were several other shootings before and after the South Street shooting, one of which was fatal, and police are investigating whether they are related.

South Street is known for its entertainment venues and nightlife and Comm Outlaw said it was a popular local and tourist hangout.

Early on Sunday, three people were killed and 14 were wounded near a nightclub in Tennessee — fourteen people were hit by gunfire and three were hit by vehicles while trying to flee the scene.

The shootings come just days after a mass shooting at a hospital in Tulsa, where a gunman sought to kill a doctor who had recently treated him and killed several others.

Just weeks ago, 19 children and two teachers were murdered at Robb Elementary School in Texas and earlier in May, 10 people were killed in a supermarket in Buffalo, New York.
