Terrified dad speaks about being attacked in his home by gang

A terrified Melbourne father says he feared for his life after being attacked by nine thugs during a frightening home invasion.

To make things worse, the gang allegedly returned to the scene of the crime while the victim was in hospital to steal his car.

The victim, David McGregor, became hostage to home invaders in his Narre Warren living room.

“A foot came to the left of me and hit me, something else hit me on the side but I didn’t see what it was,” Mr McGregor said of the vicious attack.

“It was a blur.”

Shortly before 10pm on Monday, up to nine males charged at the 59-year-old after he answered a knock at the door.

He was then shoved into his kitchen, where the gang screamed at him for his money.

“I even told them I’d had a heart attack and a stroke and they still beat the s*** out of me,” he said.

The father-of-two said he was repeatedly struck to the head with a length of metal before being kicked.

He believes most of the gang were of an African background and at least one had a New Zealand accent.

The impact the attack had on the victim has prompted police to give priority to tracking down the culprits.

“It can have an impact, in the safety of their own home, that’s why we’re treating it so seriously,” Victoria Police Detective Senior Sergeant Brad Sprague said.

To help identify the suspects, police will be checking the list of recently-released prisoners with a history of this type of crime.

They will also explore any possible links to another home invasion at Hampton Park on Saturday.

The victim’s stolen Commodore was recovered not far from where it was taken – but David McGregor has decided it’s time to find a new home.

“I want to get out of here, yeah,” he said. “I want to get out of Narre Warren.”
