Sydney council roasted over 'confusing' mix of speed limit signs

Sydneysiders have mocked the situation on a suburban street after noticing several "confusing" speed limit signs causing drivers to question how fast they should be driving in the area.

In a photo shared online of Burnside Drive in Liverpool, in Greater Western Sydney, show the stretch of road has four different signs just meters apart – and they all depict different limits ranging from 30km/hr to 80km/hr.

"Liverpool loves confusing people," the poster wrote on Reddit, alongside the photo which was taken from within the car.

The observation left Reddit users baffled and amused with many perplexed by the scene.

"30,40,50,80.... which genius is responsible for this?" one person wondered.

"Sort your sh*t out, mate," said another.

Others joked the speed limit signs were actually a maths equation the driver has to solve.

"It's a maths test; 50+30=80 divided by two sides of the road = 40," one person offered.

"You can go 160 here," said another, which is the total of the signs on the left side of the road when added together.

Mystery of the signs solved

Although the first sign on the left side of the picture looks like it says 80km/hr, with some of it hidden behind a pole, few pointed out that it actually says 30.

While that helps solve one part of the mystery, others couldn't help but wonder what the purpose of "50km/hr" sign and the "40km/hr" sign was.

"My read is that the speed limit is 30 up to that sign saying 50. This matches the sign painted on the road on the other side," one guessed

"No idea about that '40', though (but it does look like the '50' was supposed to be covered, so maybe 40 is the correct)."

A spokesperson for Liverpool City Council told Yahoo News Australia that the 30km/hr signs were installed by Transport for NSW as part of a "pilot program" as the area is considered a High Pedestrian Activity Area (HPAA).

"[The area] was previously signposted with 40km/hr in the Liverpool City Centre," they said.

The signs causing confusion are the 40km/h and 50km/h for northbound traffic, the spokesperson said, as only one should be there.

"Transport for NSW is responsible for the installation of speed limit signs. Liverpool City Council has requested TfNSW to review and remove one of the 50km/hr or 40km/hr limit signs for northbound traffic as soon as possible," they confirmed.

The car in the photo is travelling northbound which means the driver reached the end of the 30km/hr zone - as indicated by the first sign on the left of the image - and entered the area with an increased speed limit.

"The correct speed limit is 30km/hr for southbound (as indicated on road pavement) and 40km/ or 50km/h for the northbound," the council spokesperson confirmed.
