Shocking details have emerged in the case of a 10-year-old girl who was allegedly stabbed to death by her sister.

About 3.45pm on Monday, emergency services responded to reports of a stabbing at a home on Thurston St, Boolaroo, about 20km southwest of Newcastle.

Paramedics treated a 10-year-old girl for stab wounds to her upper body. However, she died at the scene.

Officers arrested her 17-year-old elder sister at the home.

The teenage girl has since been charged with murder (domestic violence) and refused bail to appear at a children’s court on Tuesday.

Superintendent Tracy Chapman said there were no records of police being involved with the family previously for “matters such as this”.

Neighbour Cindy Holloway described the incident as “awful” and explained a grandmother, mother and two daughters had lived in the home for three years.

She said the street was “very quiet” with a lot of renters and older residents.

Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty recognised that there had been “a large number of acts of violence” in the first half of the year.

“The wider issues around knives in the community has been looked at by the government, and obviously NSW police will be at the table to provide advice when necessary,” he said.

However, Superintendent Doherty assured the public that the incident was isolated from other incidents across the state.

“There’s no indications from the information we have to indicate why this occurred, this is completely out of the blue,” he said.

“My thoughts go out to a mother at home having lost a 10-year-old and now has another daughter facing court allegedly responsible. This is a terrible situation for her to be in.”

It is the third fatal stabbing in NSW in just four days, with a 16-year-old boy allegedly stabbed in the neck in Narromine, west of Dubbo, on Friday.

One the same day, a 28-year-old was allegedly stabbed while visiting a home in Quakers Hill in Sydney’s northwest.

NSW Police Deputy Commissioner Paul Pisanos said “violent crime is an issue within the community” and “often that is manifesting with the use of knives”.

He said paramedics tried for “some time” to revive the child.

A NSW Department of Education spokeswoman said on Tuesday “extra counselling support” was being offered at nearby schools and to all impacted staff and students.
