Heartbreaking new details about four young women killed in Queensland crash

Heartbreaking new details have emerged about the four young women killed in a horror accident in southern Queensland.

A semi-trailer was travelling northbound on the New England Highway near The Summit when it collided with a Honda CR-V at the intersection of Granite Belt Drive around 5.30pm on Wednesday.

All four passengers inside the car were killed. A Queensland Police spokesperson told Yahoo News Australia the victims were all in their 20s.

Police have now revealed that the women were Korean backpackers and had only been in Australia for a few weeks.

Southern Region Assistant Commissioner Mike Condon said during a press conference on Thursday that it's believed the victims had been returning home from working on a farm when their car was struck.

Commissioner Condon said it appears "that they sadly failed to give way to the driver" and were hit side-on.

He urged people to "be careful" on the roads ahead of Easter.

"There's a lot more traffic on the road this time of year, people are getting back into normality after Covid, and it is important that we all reflect on the manner at which we drive to get to our destinations over the Easter period, spend some time with our loved ones and get home safely," he said.

Queensland Police Senior Sergeant Gerard Brady said it appeared the Honda CR-V had been dragged about 150 metres along the highway, the ABC reported.

The vehicle is believed to have just entered the highway when struck.

Images of the Honda show it sustained significant damage in the collision.

The male driver of the truck was uninjured and taken for mandatory drug and alcohol testing, which 7News understands returned negative results.

Sen Sgt Brady said the driver appeared "visibly shaken".

"This is a tragic event and just a timely reminder to everyone to drive to the conditions," he said.

Investigations into the crash are ongoing with police calling for any witnesses and those with dashcam footage to come forward.
