How Ridiculous: Aussie trio reclaim record with 180m trick-shot

Aussie trick-shot sensations How Ridiculous have claimed back their world record from their American rivals after netting a basketball from 180 metres, and in just three tries.

Last year, at a dam in Tasmania, the Perth trio made history by sinking a basketball from 126 metres, making global headlines and capturing millions of views on YouTube.

But their triumph was short lived with US trick-shot rivals Dude Perfect quickly breaking their record with their own shot from a height of 162 metres in Oklahoma.

"I mean they’re very much like us, they love to push the limits," Derek said. "They love to try and do things that people haven’t done so …I’m sure they would have seen it and been like alright if we get the chance we’d love to try and top that."

"I don’t think Americans like losing.

"I don’t know my first reaction was like good on them they did it I think pretty quickly but there was a bit of, 'man we’ve got to get that record back'."

The drive to take back their record led them to a mega-dam in Switzerland, standing 180m out of the ground.

They had five days to make the shot or they would go home defeated.

With their cameras in position, and Scott and Brett at the base, Derek stepped forward for his first shot.

"I threw my first one and it was probably 10 metres out to the right," Derek said.

"Second one let go, pretty good distance as well maybe five metres to the left."

"Then yeah, just lined up the third one and let it go."

From the bridge the net was barely visible and it wasn't until he saw the reaction from his mates that he really knew what had happened.

"Then all of a sudden it’s like, I see this net move," he said. "Then I see Scott at the bottom I see his arms go up and then I just knew from that point that was it we’d done it and third attempt it was just mind blowing really."

Incredibly, within just minutes, the record was theirs again.

"Brett was like, 'did that go in?' and [I said] 'I’m pretty sure it went in'," Scott said.

"Even we had doubts like we had to revisit the footage because it comes down so fast."

With the new bar set at a staggering 180.9m, the challenge to their US counterparts is bigger than ever.

"No one should expect to go do that in less than a couple of days, you know, and yet it took Derek a couple of throws!"

"Really this project has taught us a lot, but the biggest thing is probably just to really go for, go for your dreams you know, aim, aim way beyond what you think you can do and have a go at it."

"We started in the backyard, you know here in Perth and yet we’ve been able to achieve a world record in the Swiss Alps from one of the tallest dams in the world, you know, it’s mind-blowing."
