'Worst we’ve seen': Stray dog loses 3kg of dreadlocks after makeover

An 11-year-old Shih Tzu has undergone an “amazing” transformation after having its messy, matted fur chopped off and tidied up.

The little dog, now named Simon, came into the KC Pet Project, an animal shelter based in Kansas City, in the US state of Missouri, earlier this week.

The animal shelter said Simon had “possibly one of the worst matted cases we have ever seen”.

In a TikTok video, vets are seen cleaning Simon up and removing the excess hair and dreadlocks.

"We can only guess how long it took for him to get into this condition, but one thing we know for sure is that life is about to get so much better for this boy,” the shelter said.

Two staff members worked for more than two hours removing the matted fur.

They shaved off just under 3kg of fur and “surprisingly”, Simon’s skin was in “fairly good shape”.

However, he does have some medical issues including chronic dry eye and needs some work on his teeth.

His matted fur has also led to walking problems.

“Even though Simon has been through a lot in his lifetime he is still a very happy dog,” KC Pet Project said.

Viewers on TikTok were in awe of Simon’s transformation with some in disbelief that he's the same dog under all that messy fur.

“Poor baby. His fur is three times bigger than him,” one woman wrote.

Another woman wrote Simon “is such a handsome boy”.

“Can’t believe it’s the same dog,” another woman wrote.

Simon’s transformation racked up more than 34.5 million views on TikTok.
