Man's shocking threat before 'infecting 22 people with Covid'

A man has been arrested on assault charges for allegedly infecting 22 people with Covid-19.

The 40-year-old man from Majorca refused to isolate at the request of his colleagues and even continued to work out at the gym while displaying Covid-19 symptoms, police said in a statement.

Police said an investigation into his alleged behaviour began at the end of January after a Covid-19 outbreak was linked to a "well-known establishment" in Manacor, a town on the island of Mallorca, also known as Majorca, where the man worked.

"Days before the outbreak was revealed, the worker began to present symptoms compatible with the disease, so his colleagues began to worry as they observed that he was not well," a police statement said.

Despite his colleagues and supervisor asking him to go home in fear he might infect someone, the man continued to come into the gym, even when his fever hit 40C.

Man 'threatens colleagues with infection'

According to Police, the man was "coughing loudly all over the place" and lowering his mask at work.

"I'm going to give you all the coronavirus," the man allegedly said to his colleagues.

The man did go get tested for coronavirus, however he then decided to go to the gym and his workplace instead of isolating.

The police said the man wanted to continue with his life, without having to wait for his test results and stay in quarantine.

As a result, eight people were directly infected by the man —five at his workplace and three at the gym

The people the man directly infected passed the disease on to their loved ones, including three babies.

Police said 14 people were indirectly infected by the man, taking the total to 22.

None of the people infected by the man have been admitted to hospital.

"The worker was arrested as the alleged perpetrator of a crime of injuries and yesterday he was placed at the disposal of the Judicial Authority," the police said.

According to The Majorca Daily Bulletin, Spain's Balearic Islands, where Mallorca is located, reported 53 new Covid cases on Friday.

Of those new cases, 46 were from Mallorca.
