Rising volleyball champ killed in horror car crash remembered for passion, athleticism
Heartfelt tributes have flooded in remembering a rising sports star who was tragically killed in a car accident after her vehicle slammed into a tree in Adelaide.
Georgie Rowe’s car careered off the road around 6pm on Friday, at the Karoonda Highway. She was airlifted to Adelaide Hospital with serious injuries, but died on Saturday.
The 22-year-old Volleyroo represented the country in the World League and other international matches and played in the South Australian team Adelaide Storm after her playing competitively for Heathfield High School, and was awarded numerous MVP awards.
“I grew up going to matches and watching people play. Previous national players, I’ve seen them play and wanted to be like them, play like them,” the young sports star said in an interview posted on the Volleyroos Facebook page.
Goergie's passing rocked the Australian Volleyball community, with Volleyball Australia saying in a statement it was “deeply saddened” to hear the news.
The organisation called her a “valued member of the Australian women's volleyball team and the wider volleyball community”.
The Australian men's volleyball team observed a minute silence before Sunday's World League match against Italy as a mark of respect.
The athlete’s family Peter, Fiona and Tom Rowe, said in a public statement released by Volleyball Australia, Georgia’s death was felt with “great sadness and loss,” but they had been “overwhelmed with support” from friends and the volleyball community.
“Georgie's passion was volleyball and she achieved success at all levels including playing for the Australian Women's Volleyball team,” her family said in statement.
“She was so driven and determined and had a presence on the court, whilst having a kind and quiet personality.
“She inspired so many and will be greatly missed.”
The Volleyroos posted a tribute to their teammate on Facebook, saying their “friend” was “gone too soon”.
