SA anglers catch thrilling great white shark encounter on video

A group of fishermen has revealed close up pictures of a thrilling encounter with a great white shark in South Australia.

It circled their boat for nearly half an hour, getting closer and closer.

The anglers were about five kilometres off Port Broughton when the great white suddenly appeared.

As it circled they tried to measure the shark next to their six metre boat.

“Well, he’s over three and a half metres, man,” one of the fishers can be heard saying.

“Well, the more he comes up the bigger he gets. By the time we go home he’ll be eight metres."

They kept recording and it kept getting closer.

“Look, look, look. Head’s out of the water. Head came out of the water then,” one of them can be heard saying.

The man said the creature approached the boat a few times, even bringing his head out of the water “sort of eyeballing us”.

Fishing expert Shane Menforth has a warning for those recording their angling adventures though.

“If you’ve got a big fish on the line like a snapper, you’re trying to gaff it or net it or putting a GoPro down underwater, that’s a no-no when sharks are around,” he said.

“Don’t put any part of your body anywhere near the water. Stand back and enjoy the experience."

For these fishermen it was a close encounter they will never forget.
