Fears Adelaide police have been targeted by the 'Gang of 49'

There are fears that Adelaide police have been targeted by members of the so-called "Gang of 49".

The gang, which has been terrorising Adelaide residents for years, has been involved in everything from carjackings and armed hold-ups, to break-ins and arson.

Seven News understands that police are now on high alert as gang members are out of jail and officer’s homes have been targeted in two recent break-ins.

The thieves stole keys, wallets and a car, which had been parked in the driveway. The vehicle was later found abandoned in Brompton.

It came only days after thieves tried to break into a female officer's home, also at Henley Beach.

The chopper was brought in, along with patrols and operation mandrake detectives - who are charged with investigating the Gang of 49.

Shadow police minister John Gardner told 7 News the robberies were very concerning.

“I think the very idea that police and their families might be targeted in the way that's been suggested, it would be abhorrent to everyone in our community.”

Police Minister Tony Piccolo noted that police officers, like members of the public, could also be victim’s of crime.

“Police officers are part of our general community and they may be subject to crime, like the rest of us, from time to time unfortunately.

The Police Association has declined to comment.

Police would only say investigations are ongoing.
