Figures show fewer crashes at dual Britannia Roundabout

FIRST ON 7: Transport officials are hailing the new dual Britannia Roundabout a runaway success, with figures revealing a dramatic drop in crashes.

The dual roundabout design of Adelaide’s Britannia Roundabout has been in place for six months and while motorists were initially confused, figures show the change has reduced crashes by 33 per cent.

In the two and a half years before the upgrade, there were 172 reported accidents at the intersection.

But since November, there have been just 14, resulting in four minor injuries.

“That’s a huge reduction in the number of crashes in the period leading up to the roundabout, but we’d still like that number to get down to zero,” Paul Gelston from the Transport Department said.

The RAA was so nervous about motorists getting the hang of the dual design, it posted an instructional video online.

“It is still a complex situation where you’ve got five roads and they all carry lots of traffic, so like all multi-lane roundabout configurations, the important thing is to ensure you’re in the correct lane on approach,” Charles Mountain from the RAA said.
