Adelaide's dual Britannia roundabout in action

Adelaide’s Britannia roundabout has changed over to its new dual formation and motorists have taken their first laps around the former trouble spot.

While the smaller of the two roundabouts is not yet complete, lines mark out the new configuration which aims to make the intersection safer.

The $3.2 million project has seen the single large roundabout made into two smaller versions to help improve traffic flow.

South Australian Transport Minister Tom Koutsantonis said he was very keen to try out the new roundabouts this morning.

“I was up all night, I got here at six in the morning and went through it five times,” he said.

The Royal Automobile Association (RAA) was another heavy user on the first day of operation, putting the new conditions to the test.

“A significant improvement, I think particularly motorists coming out of Wakefield Rd will notice that it’s a lot easier,” Charles Mountain from the RAA said.

Motorists who spoke to 7News had mixed views on the dual system, with some saying it was mayhem while others said it was a big improvement.

A speed limit of 40kph is in effect at the intersections while work continues on finishing the roundabouts, which is expected to be complete in the coming weeks.
