Search underway for kangaroo found with arrow sticking out of chest in Queensland

WARNING - DISTRESSING CONTENT: Wildlife carers are trying to find an injured kangaroo which was spotted with an arrow sticking out of its chest in Queensland.

The marsupial with the weapon wedged in its body was seen on both Tuesday and Wednesday at Point Vernon near Dougan Street, but an extensive search failed to find the animal on Thursday.

"This is a really sad event, they are a protected animal, they're a much loved animal," Councillor David Lewis told 7 News.

There are concerns the animal's condition may have deteriorated since it was last seen.

It is thought the animal might also be carrying a joey.

Authorities are trying to find the person responsible for shooting the animal with the arrow and say they could face jail time when found.

"I think everyone should take cruelty to animals very seriously but once again it depends on the situation, but blatant cruelty won't be tolerated," Constable Mick Gray said.
