Cancer patient forced to wait on floor of Gold Coast hospital

A terminally ill cancer patient has been forced to lie on the floor of a Gold Coast Hospital because of a shortage of beds.

It comes as the Premier highlights health as a major achievement for his Government.

It's the picture that's shocked those who've seen and shared it - cancer patient Amanda Veitch sought help from Gold Coast University Hospital on Saturday.

Instead of being given a bed, she was forced to the floor.

"My terminally ill sister Amanda Veitch laying on the emergency room floor of the Gold Coast University Hospital," The Facebook post read, posted on behalf of the patient's sister Lisa Maree.

"Could they not find some type of bed? She is full of chemotherapy and at high risk of infection! "Like" and "share" if you think this is unacceptable."

The 30-year-old was diagnosed with cervical cancer six years ago.

It follows an exclusive report on 7News last night revealing a Wynnum heart attack patient was forced to travel 60 kilometres to find a critical care bed because three major intensive care units were full including the PA - where the Premier visited today.

"Going back two to three years ago, this was happening every single day as a matter of course and it doesn't happen like that anymore," he said.

Health Minister Lawrence Springborg echoed the Premier’s thoughts.

"There were multiple traumas here yesterday," he said.

"That will happen sometimes of course ... for a person who's in the middle of it is a great inconvenience.

"We are sorry for any inconvenience to people but that used to be a daily occurrence."

  • Government targets relief for vision impaired

Under fire over bed shortages, the Premier was able to announce relief for 11,000 patients waiting more than two years for eye treatment.

The Government will fast track consultations and procedures at a cost of more than $20 million.
