Zempilas to attempt stand-up comedy

He has conquered radio and TV, but is popular Perth media personality Basil Zempilas funny?

Zempilas has signed on to present a stand-up comedy set as part of this year's 92.9's Kids Appeal, which raises money for Telethon.

He agreed to do the set for a huge donation of $10,000 which was announced on his 92.9 breakfast show this morning.

Tim Guest from Infinite Wealth pledged the large donation on the condition that Zempilas, who is expecting his second child with wife Amy, will get on stage and perform his own “tight five”.

"For Kids Appeal, I'm up for the challenge," Zemplias said.

"I've been waiting for years to unleash my 'footy' humour on an unsuspecting Perth audience, so here's my chance.

"You've probably heard the jokes before, but you've never heard them told like this! I can't wait."

Some of the acts appearing at the Comedy for the Kids event, which takes place on July 31 at the Astor Theatre in Mount Lawley, are Kath and Kim star Pete Rowsthorn and Zemplias' breakfast show co-host Lisa Fernandez.

A Raw Comedy finalist, Fernandez is no stranger to the live comedy stage.

Recently, she made headlines for dressing up as Barbie in public in an attempt to prove that the pint-sized toy sets a bad example to young girls.

But the single mum says she now wants to do a follow up to her so-called social experiment for the one-off comedy night.

"I think I might dress as Barbie for my comedy night, " she said.

"That could be my new comic character - Barbie does stand-up."

The 92.9 Kids Appeal is now in its fourth year and listeners have contributed more than $500,000 towards the cause to date.

As of today, this year's appeal has already raised a record $182,935.25, with one week still left to go.

Tickets for Comedy for the Kids, will all proceeds going to Telethon, can be purchased at 929.com.au for $20.
