Prison guard accused of sexually assaulting inmates freed on bail

A senior Sydney prison guard accused of sexually assaulting female inmates allegedly used his office to snare his victims, warning one she’d be moved to a tougher jail if she complained.

Wayne Astill, 62, was arrested on Wednesday. Police will allege that the corrections officer used his authority to control and manipulate inmates to perform sexual acts.

The 20-year veteran of NSW Corrective Services allegedly assaulted three women over two years while running the “high needs” section at Dillwynia Correctional Centre.

It’s alleged the assaults took place in his office and a photocopying room.

Astill is alleged to have asked one prisoner if she was on the pill, threatening her by saying she needed to “do as she was told.”

The alleged victim kept a record of every assault in a diary, recording the date and time of the incident.

When rumours began circulating, Astill allegedly told other inmates: “I have friends in outlaw motorcycle clubs” and “I used to be a NSW police officer.”

On Thursday a NSW magistrate granted Astill bail. He will return to court in April.
