Pregnant woman's body found by surfers after washing up on beach

A missing woman, who was five months pregnant, has been found dead on a remote beach.

Surfers came across Sonam Shelar’s body in the Wairarapa region, on New Zealand’s North Island, around lunchtime on Wednesday (local time), a police release on Thursday said.

The expectant mother’s body washed up in a spot on White Rock Beach which is on private land and difficult to access, according to the New Zealand Herald.

Ms Shelar was reported missing on Saturday from a Wellington address.

The area where her body was found was close to 65 kilometres away from the city by sea, or more than a three hour drive, Stuff reports.

Members of the Police National Dive Squad are expected to search Wellington’s south coast on Thursday, as authorities try to piece together what happened.

The young woman and her husband were married late last year and moved to New Zealand about six months ago, the New Zealand Herald reports.

Her husband told Stuff that the pair had never been to the area where her body was found.

In a statement from Detective Senior Sergeant, Warwick McKee, released on Thursday afternoon, police said the post-mortem is complete but they are unable to comment further at this time.
