Police shut down giant Ikea hide and seek game

Police have swarmed an Ikea store after thousands planned on using it for a game of hide and seek on Saturday.

About 3,000 people planned on using the Ikea store in Glasgow for the game from 3pm local time before police were tipped off, The Scotsman reports.

It appears the Facebook event that people RSVP’d to has since been deleted.

A number of people were turned away from the store on suspicion they were only at Ikea to play hide and seek.

Ikea Glasgow store manager Rob Cooper told STV News safety was a concern.

"While we appreciate playing games in one of our stores may be appealing to some, we do not allow this kind of activity to take place to ensure we are offering a safe environment and relaxed shopping experience for our customers,” Mr Cooper told the station.

Police stayed at the store until it closed at 8pm.

In 2015, the furniture giant banned hide and seek from all its stores in the Netherlands, Bloomberg reported.

Ikea group spokeswoman Martina Smedberg told Bloomberg at the time, “it’s hard to control”.

“We need to make sure people are safe in our stores and that’s hard to do if we don’t even know where they are,” she said.
