Pet dog found beaten to death in Melbourne backyard

A Melbourne family is heartbroken after a pet owner returned home to find her dog beaten to death.

Tracy Kenwery returned to her home in Altona on Tuesday about 5pm to find her dog Amigo dead.

It’s not known how Amigo, a two-year-old Bull Arab Great Dane cross, died but police believe someone managed to get into Ms Kenwery’s backyard via a side-gate and may have been confronted by the dog.

The exact cause of the dog’s death is unknown, but police did say the pup was assaulted causing fatal injuries and had bleeding from the head.

An investigation is ongoing.

Amigo was a rescue dog who Ms Kenwery got as a three-and-a-half-month-old puppy.

She told Star Weekly he was taken from a property where he was kept with fighting dogs and had scarring to his face but the pup was “very gentle” and “innocent”.

“He was skin and bones when I rescued him,” Ms Kenwery told 3AW.

“He lived in a cage.”

She added her gentle dog wouldn’t have barked or attacked intruders on her property.

Ms Kenwery said she found the garden shed and back gate open but nothing had been stolen.
