The Perth property that only vegans or vegetarians are allowed to rent

A Perth property manager has sparked controversy on the rental market after ruling out meat eaters from leasing his friend's home.

Shree Radharaman, a Hare Krishna monk, has faced a huge backlash after listing the Bayswater bungalow on Gumtree saying only vegan or vegetarians need apply.

“We stay true to what we feel is important, we don’t place any requirements on anyone’s beliefs or the way they live their life, other than we request that the house be vegetarian or vegan,” he told Today Tonight.

Since listing the home online, Mr Radharaman said he had faced the wrath of disgruntled rental hopefuls accusing him of discrimination.

“I did have one incident where someone phoned me up, who didn’t want to rent the house, but he wanted to express his objection to the ad we were running and he wanted us to take it down,” he said.

Despite the unwanted attention surrounding the ad, Mr Radharaman is defiant he will find his preferred tenants after previously renting the home to vegans for 10 years without any issue.

Mr Radharaman revealed he did not regulate the diets of tenants and that a non-meat understanding came down to respect and trust.

The Hare Krishna movement believes in non-violence and service to God, meaning they avoid meat, fish and eggs because they believe eating food should be "based on principles of compassion, non-violence and balanced living," according to the International Society for Krishna Consciousness.
