Panicked passengers beg to get off flight in dramatic video

Passengers onboard a flight caught up in bad weather begged staff to let them off, after multiple aborted landings.

Dramatic video of passengers pleading with flight attendants was shared widely on social media.

A man is seen standing in the aisle, telling staff people were "panicking" and were desperate to get off the aircraft.

"People are sick back there, we've got to get off this plane," the worried traveller says in the video, as a few people are heard saying they don't want to be on the plane.

"It's dangerous, we tried to land four times already. It's dangerous, we're scared to fly."

Plane forced to divert to wait out severe storm

The video was captured while the plane was grounded at Newark Liberty International in New York.

The JetBlue flight had come in from Cancun, however due to dangerous weather, it was unable to land at JFK, the Independent reported.

After four attempts to land at JFK, the pilot diverted the plane to Newark – about 30 minutes away – where passengers remained on the stationary aircraft for an hour.

The plan was for the plane to fly back to JFK as the storm passed.

In the video, another passenger is heard saying "take me to jail", as the man standing in the aisle insists on being let off the plane.

"I don't want to go to jail, it's not right," he says, adding they had been on the plane for six hours, when the flight from Cancun was meant to be just three.

"It's not your fault, it's not their fault, we just want to get off," he added, saying he didn't care about going back to JFK.

"It's our lives," he exclaimed, saying once again people at the back of the plane were sick with worry and called for people to have "a little respect" for them.

When asked, many people on the plane said they wanted to get off the plane at Newark.

In a statement to PEOPLE, JetBlue confirmed the plane did return to JFK where it safely landed on April 7.

"The safety of our customers and crew members is our first priority, and our pilots are well trained to manage severe weather. On April 7, flight 1852 with service from Cancun to JFK diverted to Newark due to severe weather over JFK," said the spokesperson.

"The aircraft remained on the ground for 60 minutes and once it was safe to do so, departed again for JFK where it landed and customers on this international flight could properly clear U.S. Customs and Immigration.

"No injuries were reported, and we apologise for the inconvenience this weather-related diversion created."
