Officeworks receipt reveals little-known savings trick: 'Bargain'

This simple shopping technique could make your household budget go a lot further.

As Aussies continue to grapple with cost-of-living pressures, it isn't surprising that shoppers are finding ways to save on their purchases. One such customers managed to score a $75 discount at Officeworks this week by taking advantage of the retailer's price-beating policy.

Budget-conscious shoppers may already be aware of Officeworks' Price Beat Guarantee, by which it will beat a competitor's price by 5 per cent, but some may overlook the fact it applies to products offered by online retailers like Amazon.

The shopper, who purchased a 9th Generation 64GB iPad, shared a pic of her receipt in a Facebook group for bargain hunters, showing that Officeworks dropped the $499 asking price to $423.70 to beat Amazon's offer of $446 on the same iPad model.

Another member of the group revealed she went to Officeworks after seeing the original post and received a similar discount for the same product. "Last day to pick up one of these from Officeworks. Thanks to this post for the idea of getting a price match even cheaper! $401.85 — BARGAIN," the ecstatic woman commented, sharing a snap of a docket with a competitor's original price of $423.

"Our Price Beat Guarantee includes products you find online – as long as the item is identical and in stock," the Officeworks website states. "If the identical, in-stock product can be purchased and delivered to your location via an online store for a total price lower than the one we are offering, we will beat that total price by 5 per cent."

Not just Officeworks

Some members also shared their luck with other retailers carrying similar policies. "I got a price match-and-beat at The Good Guys for $420. Call the online number at Good Guys and they will send you the price beat/match via a text. Also got $50 store cash credit," one shopper shared.

Several retailers in Australia offer similar price guarantees with varying conditions, among them Bunnings, Harvey Norman, Retravision, Supercheap Auto, Costco, Chemist Warehouse and even alcohol retailer Dan Murphy's.

Chemist Warehouse and Bunnings beat competitors' prices by 10 per cent, while Harvey Norman matches competitors' advertised prices. Harvey Norman customers who find an identical product for cheaper within seven days of purchase can get the difference refunded.

Supercheap Auto says if a product goes on sale within 14 days of the date of the original purchase, it will automatically credit the difference to its member's account. Costco issues credits for online purchases that drop in price, and allows up to 30 days for the change.
