Thousands of Coles shoppers receive 'very random' gift: 'Is this a joke?'

As Aussie families do their best to save at the supermarket checkout, Coles customers are sharing their surprise at getting an unexpected boost to their grocery budgets.

One shopper expressed her shock at receiving a Coles gift card in the mail this week, questioning whether it was a legitimate offer. "Has anyone else received a $100 voucher from Coles thanking you for using Flybuys?" the woman asked on Facebook, adding that she thought it was "some form of a joke".

But the lucky customer wasn't the only one to score a gift card, with a handful of other lucky shoppers claiming they'd received the same gift. "Yes, I got one last week but could only use it online... I used it last week without any issues. I thought it was a scam initially," one Flybuys member wrote.

Other members said they received a boost to their Flybuys to the value of 10,000 points, which is worth $50.

'It is legit'

In an update, the author of the post later revealed she'd been in touch with Coles to confirm the validity of the offer. "I have contacted Coles and it is legit. Just seemed very random turning up in the post!" she said.

A Coles spokesperson confirmed to Yahoo News that the retailer is indeed sending gift cards to select customers. "Our most engaged Flybuys members have been gifted with a $100 Coles supermarket gift card sent in the post to spend in store," the spokesperson said. "The gifts are a token of Coles' appreciation to its most loyal shoppers."

The spokesperson added that last month Coles gave 5,000 Flybuys members a freebie in the form of Coles gift cards or 10,000 bonus points, with more "surprise and delight" moments to come for customers throughout the year.

The supermarket giant ran a similar promotion last year, surprising thousands of Flybuys members with gift cards or up to 1,000,000 bonus points.
