Coles surprises Australian shoppers with $100 reward: 'I thought it was a scam'

Australian supermarket Coles is giving away gift cards by mail, but only if you are deemed as one of the retailer's most loyal customers.

A post by a Facebook user showed a picture of a letter from Coles with an attached red plastic gift card.

"As an active Flybuys member we know you're one of our most valued customers. We really appreciate your loyalty to Coles during what, for many, have been challenging times," the letter reads.

"So, as a gesture of our appreciation, we have a little something for you – a $100 gift card that you can use to treat yourself or a loved one instore at Coles," the letter continues.

"Wow, I got this in the post today! Anyone else get one?" the author of the Facebook post asked fellow shoppers.

"Yes I got $100 too," another member replied.

Not a scam, Coles confirms

The author of the post revealed she thought the offer might be a scam when she first opened her mail.

"When I opened it I thought it was a scam (hadn't had coffee yet) and then thought, how can it be a scam it's a physical card," she wrote.

Coles has confirmed that the offer is not a scam, announcing today that it will be giving thousands of loyal Flybuys members surprises including $100 Coles gift cards, 10,000 Flybuys bonus points and, for a chosen few, one million Flybuys bonus points.

Thousands of loyal Coles customers to receive gifts

The supermarket giant said in a statement that over the coming weeks it is thanking its most engaged Flybuys members with either:

  • a $100 Coles supermarket gift card sent in the post to spend in store;

  • 10,000 Flybuys bonus points, the equivalent of $50 Flybuys dollars, sent via email and activated when the Flybuys card is scanned in store; or

  • for 10 customers, a one-million Flybuys bonus points surprise, the equivalent of $5,000 Flybuys dollars, at the checkout.

Coles Chief Marketing Officer Lisa Ronson said the gifts are a token of Coles' appreciation to the retailer's most loyal shoppers and there will be more surprise-and-delight moments for customers throughout the year.

"We aim to provide the best value for our customers every day. We are saying thank-you to our loyal Flybuys members for their continuous support to our team, our suppliers and community partners over the years."
