Aussie woman stoked by simple way to save $18 filling up petrol
The influencer said her success with the fuel-locking feature is a 'sign' others should use it too.
A Sydney influencer is blown away by a simple petrol saving strategy that had her saving $18 for a rainy day.
Alex Davidson said she uses the fuel-locking feature through the 7-Eleven app, which allows you to compare petrol prices at 7-Eleven petrol stations and lock in the lowest fuel price for seven days.
And after being particularly thrilled with her results, she encouraged others to do the same.
"Guys this is your PSA [public service announcement], if you're not using the 7-Eleven app and fuel locking your price," she said on TikTok last month.
"I just saved $18 on my fuel because I locked in a good price and it lasts like seven days. The guy behind the counter was literally shocked."
Social media users react to 7-Eleven feature
The video was viewed almost 120,000 times, with many excited by the feature which can help alleviate cost-of-living pressures when petrol prices are soaring.
"Literally the best thing ever!! I’ve saved so much using it," one person said in the comments.
"I saved 25 the other day, I was so happy," another said.
"I saved $42 once!! Locked in 98 for $1.60 in Bathurst and filled up in Sydney where it was $2.40," a third person said.
How does it work?
To lock in your price, the app allows you to scan prices at the closest 7-Eleven Fuel stores with your preferred Mobil fuel type within 250kms of your current location.
After doing so, the price is locked in for seven days or until you redeem it at a store by scanning the My Card app feature.
If the locked in price is more expensive than the pump price when you fill up, you’ll still pay the cheaper price.
If there are no 7-Eleven stores near you, there are other ways to compare prices such as the Petrol Spy website.
"Go online to petrol spy and find the cheapest servo for the fuel you want," one person suggested in the comments.
