Drunk driver jailed for running down pregnant woman pushing pram in western Sydney
A drunk driver who mowed down a pregnant woman as she pushed a toddler in a pram in western Sydney will spend at least 18 months in jail.
Stanley Tohi did not have a driver's licence, but he still got behind the wheel after drinking a cask of wine - a decision his victim will never forgive him for.
Prior to that day in March 62-year-old Mr Tohi had been sober for 22 years.
In an intoxicated state, the Bidwill man drove his brother's Holden Commodore onto a footpath in Lethbridge Park, pinning pregnant mother Gemma Lewis against a pillar.
"Every time I walk the streets [and] see a Commodore I get scared," Ms Lewis said.
Sixteen weeks pregnant at the time, Ms Lewis feared she'd lose her baby, but was thankful she managed to push her daughter, who was in a pram, out of the way.
"I thought I lost my legs, I thought I'd lost it completely, and I thought I'd lost my unborn child," she said.
The judge said he was at a loss to understand why, if he'd never held a licence, Stanley Tohi would choose to get behind the wheel.
He also queried why anyone would drive when they were almost four times over the legal limit.
"I'm very glad he's in jail where he belongs," Ms Lewis said.
"He doesn't deserve to get out, I don't reckon."
But the judge did accept Mr Tohi was remorseful, and with his early guilty plea, sentenced him to a non-parole period of 18 months.
