Toddler fights for life after being hit by motorbike
A toddler who chased his sister onto a road while playing in their front yard is now fighting for life after being hit by a motorbike.
The 18-month-old was flown from his hometown of Woolgoolga, north of Coffs Harbour, to Sydney for urgent surgery.
Elijah Makuer is everything an 18-month-old boy should be – happy, bubbly and inquisitive.
He was running after his sister when a passing motorbike hit him.
"He was running after me and he took one step and then a motorbike came and crashed into him," sister Nyapath said.
Older sister Yayo said at first she could not work out what had happened outside.
"Everyone was screaming and crying, I couldn't understand what they were trying to say until I ran out and saw it," she said.
Neighbours ran out to help, with one man performing CPR while waiting for an ambulance to arrive.
"Everybody in the neighbourhood came out of their homes and tried to help us," Nyapath said.
Elijah's mother was not home, but his father was. He was too distraught to speak on camera with 7 News.
For Elijah's mother it meant an anxious flight to the Children's Hospital at Randwick, where she was told her little boy’s injuries were so severe he needed specialist treatment.
Elijah underwent brain surgery on Thursday morning.
Police say the motorbike rider stopped and helped before paramedics arrived.
At this stage, police believe it was a tragic accident.
